Believe – Speak

Without the shedding of blood there can be no remission of sin.

Hebrews 9:22

Why bruised – and – wounded?

I wanted to understand why Jesus had to suffer so much, I sought to comprehend the difference in the bloodshed through bruises and wounds.

I discovered that a bruise manifests when an injury ruptures small blood vessels under the skin. The skin is not broken, so the blood doesn’t have anywhere to go – it is an internal manifestation of the injury. The blood pools and forms clots. In some instances, the blood leaks into the top layers of the skin creating lumps. There may be internal hemorrhaging and/or bruised bones. (Isaiah 52:14)

Jesus was willingly bruised for our iniquities, (i.e., a premeditated unrepentant choice to sin, internal sins not initially discernible to the human eye). (II Samuel 11:3 – 4, 12:9)

Like a bruise the moral abnormality begins below the ‘surface,’ because the ‘black and blue’ damage has not yet manifested. (Ezekiel 44:23)

Jesus accepted our punishment for acts of immorality, gross injustice, wickedness, wrong doing, deviation from what is right and our craven unwillingness to part with behavior that is contrary to God’s will (i.e., ‘abnormality’ of heart). (Romans 1:28, Jeremiah 17:9)

Jesus was bruised so that we could be delivered from unnatural affections and so that our minds could be purified of depravity. His blood redeemed us from our sinful nature and empowers us to reverence and honor God with our affections. (Isaiah 1:18)

Without the shedding of blood there can be no remission of sin.

Hebrews 9:22

An open wound is an injury involving an external or internal break in body tissue, usually involving the skin, creating deep cuts or tears. Wounds are generally the product of a violent action resulting in minor and/or excessive bleeding.

Jesus was wounded for our intentional law breaking and disobedience. Transgressors blatantly disregard authority and willfully trespass a command. (Numbers 6:1 – 5; Judges 14:8 – 9)

Jesus endured physical harm because our willful actions exceeded the limits and/or boundaries of social acceptability, creating suffering for others.  (Genesis 2:17, James 2:11)

Jesus’ blood delivered us from the horrendous, eternal torment of total separation from God we earned through our iniquities and transgressions. (I Samuel 15:23, I Peter 1:18 -19)

Jesus was bruised…wounded….for meand called it ‘joy’.

(Hebrews 12:2)

Thank you Jesus…
